Day 5 BRUNEI

The wreck to be explored today is called Petani mistrial, a local tanker. In the 1990s, because of the storm, it hit the oil shelf and sank in the oilfield waters. It is sitting at the bottom of the sea with a maximum depth of 47 meters. Because fishing boats have trawled nearby for many years, the hull of the ship is covered with fishing nets that cannot be removed.

She’s in the oil field, an hour and a half away from the dive shop. It’s the farthest and deepest wreck we’ve ever seen this week. Seeing a wreck in Brunei is a bit like taking pictures in a mangrove forest. The best visibility is to have a good grasp of the window time of the high tide. We set out for the dive shop at 6 a.m., arranged our equipment and made a diving plan. We sailed an hour and a half before reaching the dive point. It was already over 11 a.m., and we felt frozen when we arrived.

Unlike all the wrecks I’ve seen before, the wreck looks a little like a ghost ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean, broken and mysterious, with a gloomy and evil spirit. The whole hull is covered with fishing nets, the main structure is well preserved, and there are sponge-like attachments hanging on it.

Because of the large depth, the diving air part used 16/30 helium mixture, which should help keep my mind clear at a large depth. But when planning to enter the engine room, Shinsan showed me the way to enter a door from the port side and go down the pipeline, but I made a mistake of turning left into a room and left out of the door hole. Starboard. When I circled back to the left, Shin looked inward with a flashlight on his back. I shook him with the flashlight, and he turned back in surprise.

Because the visibility is very good, I decided to try to shoot the lights here, but the process is not very smooth, because the daylight at noon is too bright, resulting in the light of the video lamp is greatly diluted, but considering that visibility will become zero in the evening, shooting at dusk is not realistic, if successful, maybe starting in the early morning under rainy weather and diving in the morning can achieve a better light ratio effect.

In the cab, I tried to shoot the tripod slow door, but because I could only use 10 seconds self-timer without installing the counterweight, the efficiency was very low. The camera was set to 2 seconds exposure, the lowest output flash was used to solidify the fish, and two video lights were continuously shaking in order to change the shadows, but the effect was not ideal.

This dive took 100 minutes to set the bottom and 108 minutes to decompress the water. The total dive time was about 3 and a half hours. This is the first time that I have dived for so long in so many years. Although it is not the best way to shoot, the new attempt is still very important, because only by constantly groping in failure can we get a better picture effect.

On the return journey, we drove most of the boat, but it stalled less than a kilometer away from the dive shop. Fortunately, another boat with oil in the dive shop was able to return smoothly. We can see that this potential is seldom visited. Even the captain did not have a very accurate estimate of the distance of the voyage.
