It took 36 years for the ancient city of Babylon to be included in the World Heritage List. Recently, at the UNESCO World Heritage Conference, the site of the ancient city of Babylon in Iraq was included in the World Heritage List, with the additional condition that the site must be cleaned up by February 2020. The Iraqi Minister of Culture said $200 million had been spent on debris remediation. Since 1983, Iraq has applied for the ruins of the ancient city of Babylon, but it has been repeatedly rejected for its excessive destruction.
Located south of Baghdad, the site of Babylon, with a history of more than 4000 years, was once the largest city in the world. The Hanging Garden is known as one of the seven wonders of the world. It is said that Nebuchadnezzar II of the New Babylonian Kingdom built Amyitis, his homesick princess, in the city of Babylon in the first six centuries.
It can be seen that the success of applying for the World Heritage Site depends not only on the historical value of the site.
