Elaphurus davidianus belongs to the family Deer. Because the head and face are like horses, horns like deer, hoofs like oxen, tails like donkeys, also known as "Four Unlike".
It was once widely distributed in the swamp low-lying areas of North China and Central Plains. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it became a garden animal from extinction in the wild. The last group of "Sibuxiang" was retained in the Royal Hunting Garden of "Nanhaizi" in Beijing, and only 120 were left until the end of the Qing Dynasty.
In 1865, the French missionary David carried a pair of "four unlikeness" from Nanhaizi to Paris. Since then, the "Four Unlike" has been transported to Europe. In 1900, the eight-nation coalition invaded Beijing, and Nanhaizi’s " Four Unlike " was robbed and killed, and then exterminated in China.
At the beginning of the last century, the Utopian Monastery Manor in Britain purchased only 18 different heads for artificial breeding. In August 1985, the manor gave China the first batch of "four unlike" 22, of which 20 were raised in "Nanhaizi". In August 1986, the London Zoo gave 39 other animals to be kept in Dafeng City, Jiangsu Province. By 2018, the number of Sifang in China had multiplied to more than 7,000.Beijing Nanhaizi Elk Park
