Two groups of dental samples recently found in Ebay are Odontaspis ferox, a ferocious sand cone shark. The origin of the specimens is Taiwan Sea, China. However, no records of this species in Taiwan and its surrounding waters have been found before. At present, cone-toothed sharks have been confirmed to be distributed in China Sea. There is only one species of conical-toothed shark, Carcharias taurus. The ferocious sand-toothed shark usually inhabits waters about 880 meters deep at the bottom of the continental shelf and sometimes floats up to shallower layers to reproduce. The overall distribution of its habitat is fragmented.
Considering the potential of the eastern Taiwan waters, I am quite confident that this specimen is authentic. If the information of the specimen is true, it will be another new species recorded in the Taiwan waters.
