Today we introduce the only penguin that breeds in Africa, Spheniscus demersus, which is also known as the donkey Penguin because its calls are very similar to those of donkeys, but because several species of penguins in South America have similar calls, they are also called African penguins. They live on the south-west coast of Africa and are closely related to Hampard penguins, Magellan penguins and Galapagos penguins in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
Male birds are larger in size and beak than females. Amazingly, the black spots on their breasts, like human fingerprints, are different from each other. They usually live in groups, and eat small fish, such as sardines, anchovies and so on. They also have insects and squids on their diet.
Of course, they also have natural enemies. In the sea, they are hunted by sharks, South African sea dogs and killer whales. On land, they are also threatened by the baboons, civets, domestic cats and dogs. Black-backed gulls also steal their eggs and chicks.
The IUCN Red List is listed as VU.
