This is 1997.

My family bought a desktop computer with Windows 3.2 and 128M memory to play card games. Most people haven’t heard of the word "internet" — except for some extremely pioneering users who connect to discussion boards in black and white through something called a "cat".

This year, the Wall Street Journal reported on the "new business" of Danni Ashe, a highly successful stripper. Her website, Danni’s Hard Drive, added 17,000 members this year, earning $2 million a year. Her website sells pictures of herself – the one without clothes.

Again, this is 1997.

Human desires have flowed through the Internet for decades. And the technology you are familiar with may have been determined by something that is hidden. This is a seemingly absurd but reasonable history of technology.

It’s not even the elephant in the room, it’s the room itself.
