[The world’s least populous people] The Tsaatan people are the least populous people in Mongolia and the least populous people in the world. There are only more than 300 people in total, and about 45 families, all of them live in Kusugur province of Mongolia. They have been listed as one of the world’s dying nations, and every photo they leave is precious.
The Dukoha people live by feeding reindeer. Their traditional culture and way of life are facing various threats, including the transition to a market economy, tourism, global warming, language loss and the assimilation of the dominant Mongolians. Fifteen years ago, the Dukoha people (and three other nomadic tribes in the area) fed 15,000 reindeer, but the number has shrunk to 2,200 and is still declining.
The Chattens’dwelling is a tent reinforced with wooden frames. The height of a person is conical. The outside of the wooden frames is canvas and reindeer skin. The space inside is very narrow.
They did not leave any written records in history. They only knew that at the earliest time they were under the administration of the Qing government. After the Mongolian Revolution, they became stateless. In the 1930s, the Soviets had asked them to join the Soviet Union, but they refused. The Dukoha people decided to join the Mongolian People’s Republic in 1956, but refused to move out of their native land to change their way of life. To this day they still retain many ancient traditions.![]()
