Red monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) are a species of monkeys distributed in the savanna and semi-desert areas of West Africa. They are the only species of the genus Rhesus monkeys. There are two subspecies: Erythrocebus patas patas (black nose) in the West and Erythrocebus patas pyrrhonotus (white nose) in the east. It feeds on insects, seeds and plant roots. Natural enemies include lions, leopards, jackals, wild dogs, pythons, crocodiles and eagles.
The body length, shoulder height, tail length and weight of red monkeys are 60-90 cm, 50-60 cm, 50-75 cm and 4-13 kg respectively. Males are larger. Running speed can reach 55km/h, which is one of the fastest in primates.
Red monkeys are social animals. There are about 12 monkeys in a group, only one adult male monkey. Sexually mature male monkeys (about 4 years old) leave the group.
