Nyffeler et al. (2017), BIRD PREDATION BY PRAYING MANTISES: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE, The Wilson Journal of Ornithology 129 (2): 331-344. This paper reviews more than 140 records of Mantis preying on birds worldwide, including 12 species of Mantis (other undetermined species), and the birds that are preyed on them. There are 24 species in 14 families. Most records of mantids predating birds come from the Americas, probably because gardens attract hummingbirds’feeders. Of these records, 2% of birds have escaped and 18% have been rescued artificially, which shows that mantids have excellent control over large prey they can catch.
In China, although there is no clear field record, it is certain that the genus Sagittaria and some species of Axilla are sufficient to prey on small birds.
