# National Day of Love for Teeth#[invention of toothbrush] The predecessor of toothbrush is chew stick. The chewing stick is made of plant twigs, one end is hairy, used for brushing teeth, the other end is toothpick, used for picking teeth. The earliest chewing sticks appeared in the kingdom of Babylon about 3500 BC. It was also found in the tombs of ancient Egypt in 3000 BC. The earliest record of chewing sticks in China can be traced back to 1600 BC. Chinese ancients usually soaked willow branches in water, chewing off one end of the willow branches when needed, resulting in a lot of soft strips, forming a toothbrush-like brush hair, both toothbrush and toothpick functions. The old saying "chewing teeth in the morning" is the source.
About the invention of toothbrushes in modern sense. According to the American Dental Association, the world’s first toothbrush was invented in 1498 by Emperor Hong Zhi, the emperor of China. In 2004, Robinson Publishing House in London published "Inventions" which listed 300 great inventions of human beings, and attributed the invention patent of toothbrush to Zhu Youyou. The traditional method of cleaning teeth in the West is to rub and brush teeth with a piece of rag. This method has existed at least in ancient Roman times. Toothbrushes did not appear until the 17th century, and became popular until the 19th century.
According to archaeological evidence, four skeletal toothbrush handle were excavated in Tang Dynasty ash pit of Chengdu Command Street in 1985. There were 12 pore implants, which were divided into two rows. In 1958, two identical bone brushes were unearthed from the tomb of King Jianwei of Liao Fu Ma, Daying Zi, Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. The skull is square, with two rows of eight pore implants on the head, and the upper and lower holes are connected. Next to the brush hole, you can also see the embroidery marks tied by the wire. The hair bundles are equally spaced, which is similar to modern standard toothbrushes.[奥特曼]
