Mink is one of the three treasures in Northeast China. Martes zibellina is a small carnivorous mammal found in Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, China, Korea and Japan. Different subspecies show geographic variations in fur colour, ranging from light brown to dark brown. Individuals have lighter abdomen colour and darker back and leg colour. The mink baby was born with closed eyes and a thin layer of hair covering its skin. They hunt mainly by sound and smell, and they have a keen sense of hearing. Minks mark their territory with odors produced by abdominal glands. They are omnivores and their diet varies with the seasons. In summer, they eat small mammals. In winter, when they are trapped in their hiding places by frost and snow, they feed on wild berries, rodents, hares and even musk deer. They also eat mollusks, such as slugs, which rub against the ground to remove mucus. Occasionally eat fish
Historically, it was hunted because of its precious dark brown or black fur. At that time, the Soviet Union allowed the Old Believers to continue their traditional way of life on condition that they surrendered all mink skins they produced.
