Lates japonicus

Lates japonicus
The fourth largest member of the family Perciidae, with a body length of 1.3 meters and a weight of 33 kilograms. The endemic species of estuaries and larger rivers on the southeastern coast of Japan were not separated from the golden perch (L. calcifer) until 1984. They resembled the golden perch in appearance, but had a larger proportion of body height. The third dorsal fin spine and the second gluteal fin spine were longer, with more lateral scales and fewer pectoral fins and gill rakes. In some cases, the eyes reflect red light, so it is also called "akame" locally. Juvenile Japanese snout bass have a relatively high facial value, and their stripes can last up to adulthood, making them a popular ornamental fish. As one of the main producing areas is Shishikawa River, Japanese snout bass is often sold in the domestic market under the name of "Shishikawa Longbei Diamond". Japanese snout bass is rare and shy, and is legendary among local fishermen, so that in the past some people thought that "barefoot" refers to the smaller homologous fish, the red-eyed sand bass.
It was considered an endangered species in Japan as early as 1992, but little is known about the wild population of Japanese snout bass, and its feeding and breeding sites are unclear. Underwater images were taken only in 2008, suggesting that these top predators would form small groups, possibly helping to find a mate in an increasingly scarce situation of the same kind. The main threat to Japanese snout bass comes from fishing, larvae are used for aquarium trade, and adults are used for fishing (although they will not die immediately, they will cause a decline in survival). In addition, urbanization pollution and overfishing of its prey are also harmful. Now some freshwater habitats have been protected, while the protection of seawater habitats needs further study. It has also been farmed to supply the ornamental fish market.
