Since the massive eruption of Kilauea last year, magma has flooded many parts of the southeastern corner of Hawaii’s Big Island. However, as can be seen from this photograph, parts of the surface, including a section of highway, survived in the raging magma, especially on the black surface formed after the magma solidified. This seemingly miraculous phenomenon, in fact, is quite common, known as kipukas, usually caused by the ground higher than magma. Source: Olivier Grunewald/oliviergrunewald.com
