Hemisphaerota cyanea, commonly known as the dwarf palm beetle, is also known as Florida tortoise beetle and iridescent blue leaf beetle. Native to the southeastern United States, larvae and adults feed on the flesh of a dwarf palm tree, the cattail sunflower.
Blue-hemisphere tortoise beetle larvae carry dung houses disguised as their own stools (see Figs. 1 and 2) and pupate in these dung houses. The dung houses not only visually cover the body of the larvae, but also smell the larvae to avoid predation by natural enemies, greatly improving the survival rate.
Blue hemisphere tortoise beetle adults not only resemble the turtle shell in shape, but also put their tentacles and hexapods under the chest, back and sheath wings like small turtles when they are in danger, and stick their bodies to the leaves of dwarf palms, baring only the hard shell (see figs. 3 and 4), so that predators such as ants can not get under their mouths. The "toes" of the blue hemisphere tortoise shell are very unusual, with a very large area, densely covered with small bristles (see figure 5), like gecko’s toes, and the ends of the bristles are covered with a very thin layer of grease (wet adhesion). Such special "toes" are like suckers one by one, firmly adsorbing their bodies to the leaves. However, the turtle shell chassis is too low, OOXX seems to have become a dilemma (see figure 6), walking, but also to lift a heavy "turtle shell" (see figure 7).
