Good news. In the follow-up to the CITES Appendix released on August 21, 2019, mackerel shark/Isurus, blue-kissed ploughshare/Glaucostegus and Ploughshare/Rhinidae are listed in Appendix 2.
In fact, members of the three major chondroid fishery families on the list are currently under serious threat from overfishing, including the well-known mackerel shark, and the pointed ploughshare ray, the smooth-nosed ploughshare ray and the round ploughshare ray. In addition to these species, habitat destruction is one of the major threats to longline fishing, bottom trawling and drifting gill nets (especially for species of the genus Raja and Raja, which are highly dependent on offshore habitats). It is undoubtedly a good thing that CITES appendix will impose certain restrictions on its international trade.
On the other hand, although it has been listed in the appendix of CITES, it still needs to be approved in China before it is included in the scope of relevant legal protection, and the process of approval needs some time. That is to say, the fishing, preservation and sale of these species are still legal in China. At present, only whale sharks, grandmother sharks and human-eating sharks are listed in the list of national key protected aquatic animals, while the other CITES appendix species are still not listed in the list of protection. We can only wait and see when these CITES appendix species can be updated and protected in China. 。
