Duck with "full mouth and sharp teeth" – Autumn Salamander Duck![]()
The genus Mergus belongs to the family Anseridae, which is different from our well-known domestic ducks. It is a meat-eating fisherman and mainly depends on fish and shrimp and crab for its survival. Its beak is sharp and slender, which is quite different from the broad and flat "typical duckbill" and is covered with sharp bulges. It’s not really teeth, but it does have the same function as teeth. It’s enough for the salamanders to bite their prey so hard that they don’t let them slip away. It’s the same as the barbs on the penguin’s tongue.
By the way, although this "tooth" looks a little vigorous, it has no defensive effect against large raptors. Figure 9 shows that the American Imperial birds prey on the red-breasted salamander (Mergus serrator).![]()
