Tsinghua University was founded in 1911. Its initial name was Tsinghua School. It was a preparatory school for studying in the United States. It was once located in Xichun Garden, a part of Yuanmingyuan.
In the Qing Dynasty, Xichun Garden was a part of Yuanmingyuan and the palace of Emperor Kangxi. During the Daoguang period, Xichun Garden was divided into two parts: near Spring Garden in the West and Xichun Garden in the east. Later, Emperor Xianfeng took the throne and changed Xichun Garden into Tsinghua Garden, which is the origin of Tsinghua Garden. In 1900, the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded China. At that time, the Qing government was defeated badly. In 1901, it signed the Xinchou Treaty with the Eight-Power Allied Forces. The treaty stipulated that the Qing government must pay back 450 million silver to the great powers in 39 years. At that time, the United States Government received 32,002 reparations. The United States Government felt that the reparations were excessive and decided to pay one-half of the reparations to train students studying in China. In 1908, the United States Government decided to pay out half of the reparations. The United States and China reached an agreement to establish a preparatory school for studying in the United States. The school was located in Tsinghua Garden. With the approval of Ye Genara’s Natong, Minister of Military Aircraft, who is also in charge of the Academy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the construction of the school began in 1909. On April 29, 1911, the school was named Tsinghua School. After the 1911 Revolution, Tsinghua School was renamed Tsinghua School.
Recently, nearly 100 ancient tombs have been found in Tsinghua, mostly in Ming and Qing dynasties, with shallow strata and no burial objects, and some of them have not even decent clothes. It is presumed that the people buried after the abandonment of Yuanmingyuan in late Qing Dynasty may have been buried.![]()
