Confidence and self-esteem are not illusory.

Self-confidence and self-esteem are not illusions or glass hearts, but about your self-expectations and self-realization based on self-expectations.

It’s easy to see that people with better educational, professional and financial backgrounds have stronger self-confidence and higher self-esteem, but if you think it’s because of these that you have stronger self-confidence and self-esteem, it’s probably a mistake.

The greater probability of this cause and effect is the reverse.

More than a decade ago, two economists in Massachusetts, Abigit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, entered the world of poor people on five continents. They learned about their diet, health, education and employment, their causes of poverty and the effectiveness of poverty alleviation policies. They had a well-read little book, The Essence of Poverty: How to Escape the Poverty Trap.

The book summarizes five suggestions that could change the destiny of poverty.

1. The poor lack information sources and believe in the wrong things. 2. The poor shoulder many responsibilities in life. 3. Some markets for services and the poor are disappearing, or in these markets the poor are at a disadvantage. 4. Inertia and inertia in management and policy in poor countries are too strong. 5. What people can or can’t do often turns into self-fulfilling prophecies.

The fifth point is that what people can or cannot do often turns into self-fulfilling prophecies.

(There are a lot of poverty trap cases in the book, among which, children give up school because teachers / parents think he is not smart enough, fruit store owners don’t try to repay the loan because they think they will still be in debt, nurses don’t go to work because nobody has expectations about their performance on the job.

Changing expectations is not easy, but it is not impossible: when women officials appear in villages, villagers not only stop discriminating against women politicians, but even think their daughters have this potential for development.

More importantly, success can lead to greater success.

When a situation is improved, the improvement itself will affect people’s beliefs and behavior. Therefore, when starting a virtuous cycle, people should not be afraid of the necessary pay.

That is to say, beliefs and behaviors, as the most important self-motivation, come partly from the improvement of initial conditions, and partly from self-expectations brought about by self-confidence and self-esteem.

So when we talk about self-confidence and self-esteem, we’re not talking about the struggle for mood or the difference between the top and the bottom, but about how you should expect yourself scientifically and reasonably.
