BBC Big Cat

Black-footed cats (Felis nigripes) are named after their black feet. Black legged cats are distributed in arid and semiarid regions of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. The typical habitats are savanna and tree savanna, or shrubbery sand. These shrubs provide a good shelter for cold, solitary night killer hunting.
Melon eaters who first saw the black-footed cat may be surprised to say: Isn’t this a civet flower? At first glance, the black-footed cat can not be distinguished from the silly cat. It has black spots on the Yellow bottom of its trunk, black-ringed limbs and tail. Evolutionally speaking, it is also a close relative of domestic cats, belonging to the genus Felis. However, compared with domestic cats, black-footed cats are more sprouting. They have bigger heads and thicker necks ("big head, big neck, big money or chef") and shorter tails, which make them look rounder. The average weight of the male cat is 1.9 kg, the body length is less than 50 cm, the tail is less than 20 cm, the female cat is smaller, the average weight is 1.3 kg, the body length is less than 40 cm. It is the smallest cat in Africa and the second smallest cat in the world (the first is the rusty leopard cat distributed in India and Sri Lanka). Black-footed cats are the smallest feline species in Africa and are listed as vulnerable by the Red List IUCN. At present, about 13,000 individuals are sparsely distributed in their habitats.
