Argopecten irradians.

Argopecten irradians is a kind of edible marine clam family. Formerly Queen Scallop, now Gulf Scallop. Originated in the Atlantic Ocean, it has been distributed to Korea, China and other places.
Adult bay scallops are about 55 to 60 mm in size, with a roughly symmetrical fan-shaped shell and 13 to 22 radiating ribs. They are mostly grey, brown or brown in color, sometimes red or orange.
Bay scallop is hermaphrodite, and adult individuals can produce male and female gametes. Since male gametes are discharged earlier than female gametes, SELFFERTILIZATION rarely occurs. Around one year after birth, they reach maturity and lay eggs. Bay scallops usually grow for 12 to 16 months, up to 26 months.
Gulf scallops have been used to support large-scale fisheries on the eastern coast of the United States, but since 1950, the situation of wild scallop fisheries has been much worse. One of the reasons may be that the eutrophication of the water caused by the development of coastal cities prevents seaweed from growing and deprives scallops of places where they can lay eggs. Another possible factor is overfishing of sharks. Because many species of sharks feed on ray species and these ray species feed on Bay scallops, the reduction of shark populations will increase the natural enemies of bay scallops, and ultimately significantly reduce the number of bay scallops.
