June, New Capital Bridge
A large stone fly (Plecoptera) is emerging collectively on the night of the full moon. Although stone flies are very common, this is the first time I’ve seen them emerge; they slouch flat rather than hang upside down and shed their old skin on rocks, a posture quite similar to that of the spring dragonfly. The process of emergence is very fast. The wings are fully stretched in less than ten minutes and can fly very quickly. In this cold stream over 3,000 meters above sea level, Amolops Xinduqiao Fei et al., the Turbulent Frog of Xindu Bridge, may be the last hurdle for them to reach immortality in 2017. Nowadays, the increasingly noisy lights in Xinduqiao Town all night bring new troubles to the indicative insects of water health.
